The moment that you begin to read this story you feel drawn into the mind, thoughts and speech of Joe.  The fact is that his thoughts are askew.  They convince him that the aspiring writer, Bec, who comes into his bookshop and smiles, is the only woman for him.  It is quite frightening to follow his thought processes, and see how one irrational thought or action leads on to another.  For example, Joe wants to get to know Bec better, and his thought processes lead him to stake out her house and to stalk her.

The pair gradually becomes involved, and Joe meets other friends and acquaintances in Bec’s life.  The tension in the story grows, as Joe resents these outsiders, and it seems he will do whatever is necessary to keep Bec to himself and remove the threat of her friends.

This book should appeal to the Pop Culture, as it is fast paced, has exhausting sex scenes, and uses coarse language loosely and frequently.  The young people involved, live on the fringes of Society, although some have wealthy families back home.  Anonymity for them is assured in New York where this story takes place.

From the beginning, you are aware that there can be no happy ending.  The suspense comes as you are wondering just what will become of Bec, and what will be the trigger that prompts Joe to act.  Just what his actions will be, or what his mind sees as the best plan to keep Bec, will keep the reader intently involved in this story.

The most chilling part is not when Joe enforces his plan.  It is the next day when he assumes normality and turns up at work.  A girl comes in to his book shop and smiles at him!
